Christy Tallant owned a furniture store in landlocked Arizona, one of the driest and hottest states in America, when she decided she wanted to go sailing.
The desert was an unusual place for somebody who has spent so much time working, playing, living or investing in the sea.
Tallant met her future husband, John Walton, in San Diego, California. Both became adept sailors, and spent weeks at a time on the ocean in a sailboat they designed and built. On their travels, the two also became increasingly concerned with ocean health, and overfishing in particular.
